This 15 day tour offers an insight into some of Japan’s main highlights, combining vibrant and cultural cities with sedate mountain towns surrounded by nature. Discover the bustling capital of Tokyo before heading to Yudanaka to see the snow monkeys at the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Explore the Northern Alps region of Japan with stays in the atmospheric towns of Takayama and Kanazawa. Learn about Hiroshima’s past and present and visit Okayama and Kurashiki with its traditional streets. Enjoy Kyoto, a city famous for its culture and charming landscape and perhaps see a Geisha in traditional dress in the Gion district.

2018 – 19

Day 1 Fly to Tokyo
Take a scheduled flight from your regional airport to Tokyo.

Day 2 Arrive Tokyo
Upon arrival at Narita International Airport you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your accommodation. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 3 Tokyo Sightseeing (B)
This morning after breakfast, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Tokyo by public transport. Visit
Meiji-Jingu Shrine and the areas of Harajuku and Omotesando. Continue to Asakusa and visit the ancient Buddhist Temple of Sensoji. See the Imperial Palace Plaza and Double Bridge before returning to your hotel.

Day 4 Tokyo / Nagano (B)
This morning your main luggage will be transferred directly to Takayama. Please keep an overnight bag with you for your stay in Nagano. Travel by public transport with your guide to Tokyo Station. Take the bullet train to Nagano (approx 109 mins). Transfer to your hotel on foot.

Day 5 Nagano / Yudanaka / Nagano (B)
Morning drive to Yudanaka, then walk from Kamibayashi Onsen to Jigokudani Monkey Park (approx 30 mins). Enjoy some time to watch the monkeys before returning to your hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 6 Nagano / Takayama (BD)
Transfer by coach to Takayama (approx 150 mins). With its riverside setting, Takayama, commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama, is surrounded by nature with the Northern Alps (Hida mountain range) providing a scenic backdrop. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 7 Takayama (B)
Enjoy a full day tour of Takayama visiting Hida Folk Village, followed by a visit to a sake brewery to sample some local sake and see how it is made. Continue to Kamisannomachi Street, a well-preserved area of traditional houses, merchant stores, cafes, and shops.

Day 8 Takayama / Kanazawa (B)
This morning your main luggage will be transferred directly to Hiroshima. Please keep an overnight bag with you for your stay in Kanazawa. Transfer by foot with your guide to Takayama Station to take the bullet train to Toyama Station, then onwards to Kanazawa. (Approx 128 mins). Upon arrival, transfer to your accommodation by foot. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 9 Kanazawa / Hiroshima (B)
This morning take a Limited Express train to Shin-Osaka, then take a bullet train to Hiroshima (approx 284 mins). Transfer to your accommodation on foot. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 10 Hiroshima (B)
Day at leisure for independent exploration. Perhaps visit the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. You may also wish to take the 10 minute ferry ride to Miyajima Island to see the Itsukushima Shrine with its floating Torii gate.

Day 11 Hiroshima / Kurashiki (B)
This morning your main luggage will be transferred directly to Kyoto. Please keep an overnight bag with you for your stay in Kurashiki. Take the bullet train to Okayama (approx 39 mins). Enjoy a tour by coach visiting Korakuen Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. Also see Okayama Castle before continuing to Kurashiki and visiting the Bikan Historical Quarter.

Day 12 Kurashiki / Kyoto (B)
This morning take a local train to Okayama, then a bullet train to Kyoto (approx 126 mins). On arrival, enjoy a tour by coach to see the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and the Ryoanji Temple, the site of Japan’s most famous rock garden. Continue to Nijo Castle which was built in 1603, then take a stroll in the Gion district where you may come across a Geisha or Maiko (apprentice Geisha) wearing traditional kimono.

Day 13 Kyoto (B)
Depart after breakfast for Nara where you will visit the picturesque Deer Park, home to hundreds of freely roaming deer. See the Todaji Temple (Big Buddha) and the Kasuga Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The final stop of the day will be at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, where hundreds of torii gates lead the way to the shrine.

Day 14 Kyoto / Tokyo (B)
This morning your main luggage will be transferred directly to Tokyo. From Kyoto Station take the bullet train to Tokyo Station (approx 158 mins). Transfer by local train and onwards to your accommodation by foot. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 15 Fly to the UK (B)
Transfer to Narita Airport for your return flight to your regional airport in the UK.

Tokyo: Sunshine City Prince Hotel

Located close to Nagano Station, approximately 2 minutes on foot and around 1.2 miles from Zenkoji Temple.  Comfortable guestrooms have modern amenities including TV, fridge, hairdryer, Tea/coffee making facilities and en-suite bathroom with toiletries.  There is an on-site restaurant which serves a breakfast buffet featuring a selection of Japanese and western dishes.

Takayama: Hida Hanasatonoyu Takayama Ouan

Features traditional Japanese designs and woven-straw flooring.  It offers a rooftop open-air natural hot-spring bath. Rooms feature tatami-mat flooring and Western beds. En suite bathrooms come with a shower and amenities. The hotel’s restaurant serves specialities of the region, featuring dishes with local beef. The daily breakfast buffet consists of over 60 local Japanese dishes and Western dishes. Guests can also enjoy late-night complimentary ramen noodles between 22:30-23:30 at the restaurant. Takayama Ouan is a 7-minute walk away from Takayama Old Town, Takayama-Jinya and Miyagawa Morning Market.
