From late March to mid April the Cherry Blossom in Japan is a sight to behold. Visitors flock from all over the world to marvel in this magnificent natural event.
Known as ‘Hanami’ (flower viewing), there are various things you can do to ensure you enjoy the experience to the full:
Take a Picnic or Bento Box
Although most of the popular places to Hanami will have food stalls dotted around them, they can be expensive and you will see that most Japanese people take their own food in Bento Boxes, so why not make your own. Pick up some tasty treats, such as Onigiri Rice Balls, in a local supermarket, take a picnic blanket, and Hanami like a local!
Dress for the Weather
Although the weather can be mild, the Hanami starts in March, which is still fairly chilly, so make sure you have a few layers and a warm jacket with you, just in case!
The later into the Hanami you travel the higher the chance the dreaded Hay Fever will make an appearance. The end of April, beginning of May is the worst time, and you will start to see more and more people wearing masks to protect themselves from the pollen. So if you’re a sufferer, go prepared!
